Thursday, January 29, 2009 Update (by Sandy Ellingson)
This last week has been filled with both good and bad things for Papa and I. He is in a wonderful new facility with great staff and his physical symptoms of pneumonia and UTI are getting better. He is also speaking more words that we are able to understand. Unfortunately, the doctors tell us that his speech is still "involuntary" speech and that he speaks primarily when frustrated, scared, angry or confused. Basically when his emotions are heightened, he is more likely to be able to speak. At one point yesterday he spoke a full sentence. It was an amazing moment. However, he continues to suffer from discouragement that his son Samuel has not been able to visit. Because of this, he has been refusing therapy and his right leg and arm are weakening. Soon without the proper motivation, he could permanently loose the opportunity to regain this ability. It is also dissapointing that his speech is out of frustration and out of his own volition. Doctors tell us they believe that Samuel will have a big effect on his recovery, so please continue to pray specifically that he will be granted permission to travel to the US to encourage his father and help kick start his rehabilitation again.

"And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28
Papa is nearing the end of his first week at the new facility, Spring Harbour. We had a week that was filled with new friends and experiences; with new hopes and dreams, and with one huge disappointment. Dr. Samuel was planning to arrive to help with Papa's recovery this week but was unable to come. This was extremely disappointing to Papa. So much of his recovery could be greatly improved by the presence of his son. Both Dr. Samuel and Papa speak many languages. I have been successful finding some nice Indians who can speak one of the languages but not anyone who can speak all of the ones that he and Sam can speak. I think it is about seven different languages. As his speech therapy continues and we hear more and more verbalizations from Papa, it is so frustrating and discouraging to him that we (Americans taking care of him) can barely speak our own, much less any of theirs. I believe that having Sam here is going to be the key to his recovery.
They are still working on his physical therapy as well and trying to help him gain enough strength that he can use his left side to control his balance and transfer needs. This too would be much more fun (and easier) with Dr. Samuel's help. All of the research states that the most critical time after a stroke is the first 3 months. We are already almost half way through the critical period. Please join us in praying that Dr. Samuel will be able to come to the US to help as soon as possible. I am hanging on to the promise of God in Romans 8:28. We still believe that God can provide a complete healing miracle and we will not waiver on that belief, but until then we are working to improve our daily condition as much as possible.

Monday, January 19, 2009 Update (by Sandy Ellingson)
Today Papa moved from the Roosevelt Institute of Rehabilitation in Warm Springs to Spring Harbour in Columbus, GA. We were sad to leave the many wonderful people that we met while we were there. I could write a book if I mentioned all of them. The new location is only ten minutes away from Shelley and the boys and also the office. It is a beautiful campus with independent, assisted and skilled care. The rehabilitation staff is wonderful. One of them is actually a therapist that he had while he was at St Francis hospital and he could not believe how far Papa had come. He told Papa today that he was excited about the potential for improvement and that he was willing to work hard to help him meet his goals. I told him that he was talking to the man that set a goal of one million orphans to raise, so he was not afraid of setting high goals. One of his other therapists is the daughter in law of a long time friend. This friend was a missionary and visited India many times and Papa has stayed in their home several times. This is going to be wonderful because she will know the Papa from before the stroke and will completely understand what he is capable of accomplishing. The only therapist that we did not meet today was the speech therapist. I look forward to meeting her / him tomorrow.
Papa was so excited after arriving here that he didn't want to stay in his room. We spent the afternoon touring around the facility. It is really like a small city and so there was a lot of exploring to do. His meals were excellent and he cleaned his plate both times. (except for the carrots!) It is about 8 pm now and Papa has already turned in for the night. It is so nice to see him sleeping peacefully for probably the first time since he entered the hospital at Thanksgiving. The units are very private and quiet. There are no loud speakers that go off every 15 minutes paging nurses, and they only come every two hours to check on you but they do not wake you unless absolutely necessary. His blood pressure and his sugar have both been excellent today. I am so use to the endless activity that I almost felt like maybe he was not getting enough attention, but they do their jobs around here so quietly and effortlessly that you never know they were here. His urinary track infection and the pneumonia are both under control again and his energy level is back up so we look forward to the next few weeks.
God has been so good in this entire process. It is easy to see His hand in every step that we have made. I truly believe that Spring Harbour is God's next step to Papa's full recovery.
Please continue to pray for Papa to have the energy the he needs to do all his therapy and still have enough left for his body to continue to heal. Pray for him to have a clarity of understanding of the things that he is asked to do and the willingness to do them even when they may not make sense to him. With this we also still pray for contined clarity of mind and thought. Finally, I want us specifically to pray this week for the return of movement in his right leg and right arm. Since we are with a new therapist I believe that now is the time for this specific request to be asked and answered.
Thanks for your continued prayers!
Sunday, January 11, 2009 Update (by Sandy Ellingson)
In the days since my last update, things seemed to be going well here at "Camp Warm Springs!" Papa continues to progress. He has been able to sit and stand longer (with assistance from the equipment) and his muscles in his abdomen become stronger each day. He has also begun to speak, in all languages. He says No in both English and Malayalam. This is not all the time, but when he really means it, we hear it. He also replied that he was "Better" when asked how he was doing one morning. The funniest comment came when he was very frustrated with me one day because I was trying to get him to do something that he did not want to do and he finally said, "I'll do it, I'll do it, I'll do it!" Even in frustration, those were beautiful words. He also is beginning to give better instructions and help us know what he wants. He easily points to things that he wants, and he even has told us "shoes off" without being asked when he wants his shoes removed. He is assisting in the mornings with getting himself dressed, and his diet has been changed to one that is chopped and not pureed. All in all, for a man who was suffering from pneumonia and a stroke and was told that he would not live through the night just over a month ago, I would say he is doing great!
We have seen a small recurrence of the pneumonia this week. Of course we knew that the pneumonia could remain in his lungs for up to six months as it cleared because it was such a severe case and he is not up and moving around much, so we are not overly concerned about this. He also has a small urinary track infection and all of this is zapping his energy somewhat.
The biggest news is that unfortunately, according to the standards at the Roosevelt Warm Springs Rehab facility, Papa has not improved as much as they would like so this will be our last week here. We will be moving to a different facility that can concentrate on more physical therapy and some of the other remaining medical issues from the stroke and pneumonia. We are not sure where we will go yet, but it will most likely be back in Columbus.
Please pray for God to open the next door for us and close all the others. We believe that God is speaking more loudly through Papa in these days than he has ever spoken before, so we are just looking for the next field that is white for harvest.
Also continue to pray that as Papa's ability to speak improves, that his ability to send the right messages from his brain to his speech center improves as well. Continue to pray also for Dr. Sam to receive all of the permission needed to come for a visit very soon. His Dad will be so glad to see him.
The conversation with the case manager this week about Papa's progress was disappointing for me, but once I thought about it, I realized that it is not man's opinion that counts but God's. Papa believes that God is going to heal him and he has not given God a time limit. So even though I do not understand everything that is going on around us I am going to do what the line in an old Newsong release said....
When you can't see His (God's) hand, trust His heart!
Have a blessed week and I will update you when we find our next place of service.
Wednesday, January 7, 2009 Update (by Sandy Ellingson)
After a small set back over the last couple of days Papa continues to improve. Today was one of the most animated days I have seen yet. On Monday evening he gave me quite a scare. It turned out that the pneumonia was flaring back up but we didn't know that at the time. On Tuesday morning he really did not want to go to therapy or even get out of the bed. He even put his left arm out as I tried to wheel him past the door to therapy to stop me. I was thinking that he had just hit one of those times we all hit in our life when we start on something and are excited about it initially, but then when we realize how hard it really is, the enthusiasm fades. (Like a diet or exercise plan!) So I did what any good coach would do, I said, "I know you don't want to, but let's do it anyway!" The entire morning he could hardly keep his eyes open.
The afternoon was worse. He still tried and did as much as he could do, but I could see he was really battling a "no energy day!" How bad did I feel when finally that afternoon they took his temperature and did an xray to find that the pneumonia had flared back up. I resolved to "listen" more closely to Papa after that. So they have started him on some antibiotics and today he felt much better. He tackled therapy in the morning with a vengeance, and then refused to let them give him his medications through his feeding tube. He actually got the words out, by mouth! So, they gave him that yucky medicine by mouth and he took every bit of it. He continued to try and speak to different people all afternoon. When the respiratory therapist came in, he asked Papa if he remembered him and Papa managed to say, "I remember!"
Tonight he received a phone call from a fellow ministry friend and he must have talked to him for 5 minutes non stop. Unfortunately, the connection was lost so the person did not hear him, but he was definitely speaking in an Indian language and there were many repeated words that I heard. It was one of those times I really wished I could speak his languages fluently. I just know that when he and Dr. Sam (his son) are once again united, he will start speaking more and more. This morning he also took my Bible from me after the devotional and prayer time and tried to find a scripture he wanted me to read. Unfortunately, it is a small travel Bible with the really thin pages and he was unable to fan through it like he wanted to. So today we brought him a large print Bible and put tabs on it so that he can at least get us to the right book. The best part of this is that it gives us an indication that he can read the words. Thankfully, he has not lost his sense of humor and he continues to laugh at me, others and himself as we stumble through this journey together. Please continue to pray as we see small miracles everyday.

Praise the Lord for a New Year! Dr. Thomas was moved from St Francis Hospital to Roosevelt Institute of Rehabilitation (http://www.rooseveltrehab.org/) on Christmas Eve. Since that time, he has been undergoing many hours of physical therapy.
The hospital and staff have been wonderful. Papa is off the oxygen completely now, he is only receiving supplemental feeding through his feeding tube as he is able to eat pureed foods now, and he is sitting unassisted for longer periods of time, as well as building his stamina standing. He still has no use of his right side, but he is learning ways to compensate for the loss of this part of his body and is rapidly adapting. He has also started using his lips to begin to form words and we have heard the beginnings of his speech returning.
We have seen daily miracles and continue to trust God for a complete healing. Although, I would like to say that my faith has been as unwavering as Papa's, I admit there are days that I question all that is happening. My questions are never about God and I don't doubt Him, but I often doubt myself. When the days pass and I don't see the immediate healing that we all want, I wonder if it is that I don't have the faith required for God to act or is there a lesson God is trying to teach us, or is there some sin in our lives that we need to deal with before the healing can occur.
Jesus said in Matthew 17:20 that nothing would be impossible for us if we have faith as a grain of mustard seed, which is no bigger than the head of a pin. So, that must not be the reason because after 40 years of walking with the Lord, I know my faith is larger than a mustard seed. I also sometimes wonder if the answer is being delayed. Like in Daniel chapter 10, we get an indication that the angels have to fight their way through the enemy's lines to get the answer to us. If that's the case, and we stop praying before the answer can get to us, would the angel just turn around from the battle he is in, since the problem has seemingly lost its importance in our prayer time? I will not let the delay cause me to lose hope. I will not cause the angel to retreat. Finally, I looked at the parable that Jesus gave in Luke 18 about the widow's persistence at coming before the wicked judge, who says, "because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won't eventually wear me out with her coming!" I don't think that God needs to be reminded of my requests, nor can I wear Him out even if I try, but I believe that God gave us this example for a reason. Consistently praying each day, keeps me reminded of where our help comes from. No matter how the healing occurs, whether through God using man and medical science, or through an absolute miracle, I commit to remain faithful in my belief that God will intervene on behalf of our beloved "Papa" and give him the healing He (God) desires.
So let us keep on coming boldly to the throne of grace, so that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:16
Please join me in praying every day for Papa. I am specifically praying that God will raise him up and allow him to speak at the graduation service in Kota in February 2009. Amen, let it be so!
Note: Biblical insights to my questions came from the journals and sermons of Papa himself. He has preached on and taught these principles many times and continue to exhibit a faithfulness and trust in God that is awe inspiring.
Friday, December 26, 2008 Update (by Sandy Ellingson)
Praise God! On Christmas Eve, in somewhat of a surprise move, Dr. Thomas (Papa) was taken from the hospital to a rehabilitation facility. It was somewhat of a shock for us because we had been told that he would not be moved until Friday or even Monday following the holidays. But amidst all the last minute decorating, shopping, cooking, cleaning, planning, fretting, and wrapping, we also bundled up Papa, loaded him into an ambulance and off to Warm Springs Rehabilitation Center we went. Once he arrived he was checked in (to the facility), checked out (evaluated for his condition), and moved in to his new home for the next several weeks. Christmas day was filled with lots of visitors and well wishers, even a few carol singers. Even though it was a busy day, it was still considered his day of rest because therapy started today (26th).
We encourage Papa by telling him that this is the next step to returning to his beloved India. Every time this is mentioned you can see the determination in his eyes. Each day the sparkle and the fire that was once there, burns more brightly. Each day there is some miraculous sign from God that he is getting better. He continues to do things that the doctors at one point said he would never do again. Today he continued showing us signs that his ability to speak is returning. He had made some "involuntary" sounds earlier in the week, but today there were two clear examples of attempts to voluntarily speak. It was so amazing that I smiled from ear to ear. After this, I asked Papa if he thought that God reacted the same way with us when we are learning to do things that must seem so simple to Him, yet He delights in them anyway. He just smiled his crooked smile. I told Papa that I know inside he must be frustrated to have to "start over" in so many areas. He just smiled while giving me the "Indian nod." I really think that God has given him a peace that surpasses at least my understanding. He seems to be just waiting on us to catch up. I worry that he is not able to communicate with me (us) and yet, he communicates every day with the One that is most important to him and there is no communication barrier between them. I know that I have spent the last month with a man who walks with God everyday, even if he never leaves his bed.
Tuesday, December 23, 2008 Update (by Sandy Ellingson)
I always like to get Papa's input on my updates and today's was no different with one exception. I hadn't gotten it right....twice! As I think back over the last three days, I realize that not only was Papa not ready for this update to be posted, but God wasn't ready either. But I believe that today is the day. Originally, I started this update from "Message #5-Faith" in Papa's journal. We had two pretty amazing things happen and I knew that it didn't surprise Papa one bit. After all, we had prayed for it. So as we read again from Hebrews 11 and Papa's notes, I read anew these words:
"Faith is the substance or confidence of things hoped for; faith is the evidence of things not seen. (Heb 11:1) Faith is substance. What is substance? When we go to purchase land, property, provisions, food, clothes etc, we take currency or credit cards. These things are like faith. They are the substance that gives us confidence we can purchase these things." All I could think was Wow! Do I have that kind of faith?
Later in his journal Papa says:
"Faith and Hope go together. Without faith, there is no hope. Without hope, there is no faith. If you are hoping for anything you must have faith. Your hope must be based on God's Word."
Normally I have read these words, and thought of course that God's Word is referring to the Bible. But this day, I read it and thought of a day several weeks ago, before the stroke, when Papa said God had told him that he would not die that it was not his time. In his heart, he has held on to this word from God and believed it without wavering.
Finally in this message he states that "Faith starts with small beginnings. (Matt 17:20) God's Word says if you have faith like a mustard seed you can move a mountain. A mustard seed when planted will grow. Someone once said, start small or don't start at all."
Okay, I am humbled. I thought of Papa's faith and how it must be like a mighty oak tree that grew from a single seed, like the mustard seed. And then I thought of me, and wondered when I would be like the mustard seed.
Again here is Papa teaching me about faith. I sat and pondered that hadif I lived in Biblical times I would have never made it into Chapter 11 of Hebrews, the chapter about the heroes of our faith. But if Papa had lived in Biblical times, I believe he would have been there at the top of the list.
In the last couple of days, by faith and without ever doubting or questioning God, (on Papa's part anyway), we have witnessed many miracles:
He does!
Thursday, December 18, 2008 Update (by Sandy Ellingson)
Each day from Papa's prayer and message journal that he kept every day before the stroke, we read. Today the next "message" was titled, "Do you want to be made well?" (John 5:1-19) In the message, Papa writes the insights that the Lord has given him on the passage about the paralyzed man at the Bethesda pond. The man had been there for many years, hoping for healing. It is said that the man waited 38 years! I have to admit that this is something I struggle with as I sit and minister to this wonderful man of God each day. I feel anxiety wondering when the next sign of improvement will come. I wonder what he must be thinking and if he is upset with God or disappointed that he has not received a miraculous healing already. I pray each day that God will give him patience with himself as he recovers, and me strength to remain positive and hopeful. And then this morning, we open his journal, of his own personal thoughts on God's Word and what God is saying to him in this passage. I would like to share a passage of his writings with you. (I have permission.) These are "Papa's" own words.
"In the great festival of the passover feast, when everyone else was enjoying the feast and meeting people in the temple, Jesus went looking for lost sheep at the Bethesda pond. Jesus went to the most needy person at the pond. Who was there to help him? He had been waiting 38 years. There was no one there to help him. But he was not discouraged or disheartened. He believed that one day he would be healed. I do not know a person who had more faith than this one man. By seeing his faith, God the father sent His Son, not an angel, to heal him. How wonderful to wait for Him and trust Him than trusting in any human being. After 38 years, God's only begotten Son came to him. His delay was not His denial."
My heart sang as I read these words. I know that Papa is patiently waiting on our Lord for healing. I know that I suffer from doubt but I don't think he ever does. The other point Papa made in his message was that Jesus asked the man to do something. He had to take up his mat and walk. Papa is going to be taking up many "mats" in the days to come, but we will never stop waiting expectantly on the healing that Jesus alone can provide.
Each day brings wonderful blessings of small triumphs. Today is was just being able to sit for 5 minutes while balancing himself. We continue to pray for his swallowing and speech to return. We thank you for all of the prayers, call, visits, and demonstrations of support. I feel I have to close this update with a plea from Papa that is ever on his heart and mind. "Don't forget my orphans and preacher boys!" In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hopegivers and that will lift his spirits and encourage him more than you will know!
*Note: This update was read and approved by Papa.
Wednesday, December 17, 2008 Update (by Sandy Ellingson)
After three weeks of being in the hospital with Dr. Thomas, you would think that my sense of amazement would have lost some of it's wonder. Not so, as we read from his personal prayer journal this morning, I read to him notes on Psalms 116:8. His notes said, "If you want true stability that God offers you set the Lord always before you and keep Him in your right hand and you shall not stumble or be moved." We read this just minutes before the physical therapist came in and said, "Let's see what you can do today Dr. Thomas!" I watched as the therapists struggled with this big man of God to help him to try and balance himself while sitting on the side of the bed (a position they put him in.) It was amazing that he once again used his right arm, that has no voluntary movement, to help to balance himself. I then watched as they helped him to stand, and could see through his eyes what a struggle it was, but he persevered. Finally, they were able to sit him in the chair and allow him to rest for a few minutes. Of course this entire time, I was thinking of the verse that he had written about in his journal. I had to look it up for myself and what I saw really blessed my soul.
For You have rescued my soul from death, My eyes from tears, My feet from stumbling. Psalms 116:8
I couldn't help but ask Dr. Thomas (Papa to me), if he had been thinking of this verse while he was struggling through the therapy and he nodded yes. I also asked if he believed what it said and he said yes and squeezed my hand.
Although the physical recovery has been slower than we would like, we see small miracles each day. We ask that you continue to pray that God will provide him a complete recovery. His desire is to be able to speak at services in India in late February. A lot will have to happen from now til then for this to be possible, but our belief is that all things are possible for God.
Sunday, December 14, 2008 Update (by Sandy Ellingson)
Today is Sunday, a traditional day that is full of worship, praise, and adoration of our Lord during church services in Dr. Thomas's home in India. However, today Dr. Thomas is still fighting the battle of returning to complete health after his stroke following pneumonia on December 5, 2008. He is a man of great courage and determination. In the last few days we continue to see improvements in his ability to swallow and in his recovery from the pneumonia. He also is becoming stronger and more alert so that he can participate in his rehabilitation more fully. "He still has a long way to go," said his primary care doctor, "but I have never seen anyone more determined." In fact he amazes all those at the hospital each day. Many are saying that he is preaching louder these days than he has ever preached before, and he cannot even speak. Currently we are assisting him with his recovery by helping him to return to his normal routine as much as possible. We read to him the names of people that are on his prayer list and wait patiently to give him a chance to pray over the topic. (Many of those are probably some of you who are reading this.) We also have a Bible study time, by reading chapters from some of his books that he has written to him or reading pages from his personal diary. It reminds him of the promises God has made to him and the truths that he has uncovered in the Word. At these times is when he seems the most alive. On Dr. Thomas's birthday, in his personal journal he wrote:
"Fear Not." (Isaiah 41:10) "This word came to me on 14 October 2008 early morning at 4:00 AM on my 74th birthday. I have completed 73 years and had my 74th birthday. On that day, when the Lord gave me this word, I was really blessed. I felt he was speaking to me directly. I felt that He was calling me by name and saying, fear not. I read the words like this, fear not there Thomas for I am with you. Fear not I will help thee."
Dr. Thomas believes these words with all his heart and we are believing them with him. Please continue to pray for the complete recovery of Dr. Thomas. Also pray for the ministry, as even through this trial, Dr. Thomas has never forgotten his orphan boys and girls.
Wednesday, December 11, 2008 Update (by Sandy Ellingson)
Dr. Thomas suffered a stroke this last week, and as of this morning, we are still seeing paralysis on his right side that includes his eye, his arm, his leg and his ability to swallow or speak. We are specifically praying that God will restore his ability to speak and swallow soon. If not, they will have to do additional procedures to help him continue to improve. However, there are also signs everyday that God is faithful and continuing to help him in his recovery.
Genesis 32:10
I am not worthy of all the unfailing love and faithfulness you have shown to me, your servant. When I left home and crossed the Jordan River, I owned nothing except a walking stick. Now my household fills two large camps!
As I was sharing this verse with our beloved Dr. Thomas this morning, I told him that it reminded me of him. So often during his hospital stay, (before the stroke), he would say to me, "I do not deserve anything that God has given me. He has blessed me even still." When Papa left southern India to go to northern India at the call of God, his plan was to walk the entire 2000 miles to get there. I wondered if God called me to go somewhere, how I would react. Would I wait for God to provide the easy means to go, or would I start out walking? Because Dr. Thomas was faithful, God has filled his house to more than two large camps. Yet his desire is still to see them larger. Not with money or possessions, but with children. Even this morning, as I was asking him questions to stimulate the brain, I asked him what he wanted me to say on his update. I asked, "Do you want me to tell people you are feeling better?" He nodded yes. I asked him what else he wanted me to tell you and gave him a list of things he could answer yes or no to, and the one that got the biggest yes was the orphans. I was so humbled. Here is a man, who is literally fighting for his life, must be extremely confused about all that is going on, and he never waivers on the mission God has given him. One Million Orphans!
Even with all the positive steps he is making in his recovery, he is still in a very critical state and we need to continue to fast and pray fervently for his recovery.
On behalf of Dr. Thomas, "Thank you for your prayers!" (Can't you hear him say that!) The effectual fervent prayers of the righteous availeth much. James 5:16b
December 8, 2008 Update
M.A. made some very positive improvement yesterday and he's been a real fighter. He is still in ICU, but his condition has improved since December 6, and we continue to hope and pray for his quick recovery. Please keep your prayers and words of encouragement coming. Thanks so much for your faithful support and love!
The following 3 minute video clip was recorded by Samuel Thomas this last week. It was recorded in response to his father's being admitted to the hospital, and in response to M.A.'s concerns that the orphans continue to be supported while he was in the hospital. Please take a moment to watch.

December 6, 2008 Update
M.A. has suffered a serious setback today and his condition has become more critical. Please continue to uphold him, his family and the entire ministry in prayer.
December 4, 2008
The staff at Hopegivers write to you today with a special and urgent prayer request for Dr. M.A. Thomas, founder of Hopegivers International. Dr. Thomas recently arrived in the U.S. for a month long trip and shortly thereafter came down with flu like symptoms. His condition took a turn for the worse this last week and has since been hospitalized with pneumonia for the last 7 days.
Dr. Thomas is receiving good care, but he has had some very difficult and tiring days and was even admitted to the CCU at one critical point. As his condition is still very tenuous, we are asking that you lift him up in prayer especially during the next few days until he is out of the hospital; and then continue to pray for his quick recovery back to health.
Dr. Thomas wants everyone to know that he appreciates your prayers and hopes to be out of the hospital and back on his feet as soon as possible. Specifically, Dr. Thomas says:
"I have perfect peace. I am not restless and the word that came to me today is this: I am not dying and I will stand and declare the work of the Lord! I want you to pray for me, but above that, I want you to pray for the orphans and the One Million Arrows vision. If I leave you, I will be in the perfect place, but my desire is that one million orphans will come to know Christ and each one of them will raise up many more orphans themselves. I want the work of the Lord in India, Haiti, and Africa to be remembered in your prayers daily. You are most beloved!"
In typical fashion, Dr. M.A. has used his hospital stay to witness to hospital staff and to promote the work of Hopegivers and the needs of his orphans. How amazing that even as he has struggled at times during this last week to hold onto life, we was still taking the time to pray with and for the doctors and nurses who were attending to him.
Dr. Thomas also encourages everyone to not forget the orphans, but to continue to support them so that the goal of raising up one million orphans will come true.
Thanks again for your continued faithful support and prayers for both M.A. and Samuel Thomas as well as all those involved in the Hopegivers ministry worldwide.
Our Hope is in Him,
The Hopegivers International Staff
"Help for Today - Hope for Eternity"
I am so blessed to know Bishop MA Thomas as he is such an example to us all. Even with his severe illness he only thinks of others and the vision God has given him for the orphans to be raised up to be witnesses for Christ. Remember his family during this crucial time with your prayers.
Brother Thomas,
Having just heard about your hospitalization, we are praying for your speedy recovery. We regularly pray for the work in India and for you specifically. You have been a great blessing to me and my family for many years.
God Bless,

Dear Br. Thomas,
I had the distinct pleasure of meeting you the time you came to Pittsburgh to meet with Bishop Edward Donovan. A few of us had the honor of spending a few wonderful hours of fellowship with you at the house you were staying in with Sam. I'll always remember the message you gave about "despise not small beginnings..". I treasure still the time I spent listening to the Lord speak through you to all of us. As you know Jonathan is now our Bishop (he was in my first youth group class!!) and the Lord is moving the "small beginning" to a new place....
Please know that you, your family and ministry are in my prayers and now having visited India last October with Jonathan, india and all of you are close to my heart!!
God Bless,
Fr. Steve Young, Assistant Pastor
Community of the Crucified One

As soon as I received the message about Dr. Thomas I prayed for him immediantly. Be encouraged Dr. Thomas your Jehovah Rapha is your healer. God said he will give us the desires of our heart and I asked our Heavenly Father in Jesus name to give Dr. Thomas his desires to witness one million orphans come to Christ. Dr. Thomas I have never been to Hopegivers but I have dreamed of coming there for years. One day I will meet you God willing! But until then I love you, every staff member and every child in Hopegivers. We will continue to pray from VA. AMEN To God be the Glory!
In the aftermath of the travesty in Mumbai I am so glad you are committed to be a man of transformation of children into arrows for God--not arrows that kill, but arrows like those of the fabled cupid's, but ever more real, that bring the love and light of Jesus Christ to the people of the earth. We pray for you daily.
Hi Papa,
Julie Ferwerda came to my 2nd grade class about a month ago and talked to them about Hopegivers and the awesome work you have done. Since we heard you've been sick, my students have asked to pray for you daily and ask to pray for the 'orphans in India who miss him.' You are in our thoughts and prayers...we are praying for a speedy and complete recovery!
Pastor M.A. We're praying for you, trusting the Lord in ALL things. We know your heart is with your family and friends in India.

Thomas Family
It is an honor to be able to give a small portion of our time for a family that has continually given their all for the cause of Christ. Just Last week God sent Dr. Ma to us to encourage us and we could only hope we could return the favor. Before we parted ways last week Dr Thomas said let us pray. Then he broke out in song, no problem breathing that day," God is still on His Throne and He will take care of His own. His promises are true He cares for you, He will take care of His own" I thank God that I was able to sing it back to him this week.
You are all so Special to us and we continue to see God at work and answering prayers! Looking forward to great things!

I just want you to know that I am praying for you and would love to see you! This is Diana Earls (Barnes), Glenn Barnes oldest daughter, I have great memories of your visits with us and staying at our house I even gave you my room!!! I love you and am praying for your healing.
Praying for a speedy recovery----May the Lord continue to bless and use you wherever you are! Our Love for you and your ministry always!
Dear precious beloved saint of God,
We know that you are in the perfect hands of God and that He has said:
Ye have not, because ye ask not (James 4:2), so we continue to pray
for you.
We pray that the Lord will lead the doctors in their diagnosis and treatment and that the healing power of the Holy Spirit will flow through your body from the top of your head to the soles of your feet burning up all infection in your body – especially anything in your lungs.
The Lord has brought you through time and time again because of your willing servanthood to Him. Every member of ourstaff joins me in fervent prayer for your quick and complete recovery. We also pray that the Lord will provide the funds that have been lost through your not being able to speak in the churches where you had planned. We ask the Lord to make a way where there is now way and we ask Him to give you favor with all with whom you come in contact.
We sincerely hope to see you this trip but understand that your plans have changed so we know the Lord’s will be done according to my favorite verse this year – all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).
Prayer requests have been sent around the world for you and thousands of your brothers and sisters are holding you up in prayer. We look forward to a good report soon.
With love and prayers,
John Hash & the Bible Pathway staff
Dr. A. M. Thomas,
It over a year ago when we came across the website of Hope Givers International. We got very impressed with the vision and activities this organization. Please note that we have never got tired remembering this organization in our devotional and congregational prayers. We are glad to receive this call for prayers, knowing that you remember us as being a part of you in spirit.
We believe God word is true and never a lie. That "He sent his word and healed us and delivered us from our destruction. Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness and for His wonderful works to the children of men! And let them sacrifice the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and declare His works with rejoicing" (Psalms 107:20-22).
GOD has created you to 'declare His works with rejoicing' and you shall move forward in the strength of the Lord to 'declare His works with rejoicing.' I decree in the name of the Lord Jesus that total recovery and restoration of your health this very hour. I believe that the 'name of the Lord is a strong towel, the righteous run into it and he is secured.' You are secured in your health in Jesus name. For the "name of Jesus is lifted up high above every name and at the mentioning of the name of Jesus, every kneel must bowl and every tongue must confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God." Whatever name the illness you experience is called, it must hereby bowl in the name of Jesus and submit to the authority of the scriptures. Jesus has brought to you healing ad you are healed indeed. Declare it and claim it right now. It must act upon your faith. For you shall live to declare the works of the Lord.
May the Lord increase your testimonies of victories and successes right now and forevermore. AMEN!
Remain Blessed
Nancy and I are praying for you and the orphans. We are trusting God to take care of you. We are looking forward to your next visit. Bishop Eddie.

Thank you sir for the example you've always been. It's changed/blessed my life and millions of others! You are also the best singer I've ever met. Praying for you
Dearest Papa,
Though we pray for you and the ministry faithfully, I can honestly tell you that we have been in constant prayer for you this past week. On our knees, Carrie and I have begged the Lord for your life because we have so much left to do! When my dad had cancer, you called him and told him that you had your orphans praying for him and he has been cancer free for eight years! You are the man with a heart as big as India, and I want you to know that I will keep working to help you realize your vision of one million arrows. The times I have been blessed to be with you, I could sense your close walk with the Lord. Carrie and I are humbled to be a part of your work. We love you Papa!

Dear Dr. M.A.,
We are grieved to hear that you are ill, yet we are inspired by your unwavering faith. We are praying for you and for your family while you recover. We also pray for those whom God has sent your way while in the hospital, that they too may come to know Christ. We lift up the orphans while you are away, and for those ministering to them.
God bless you, Doctor Thomas. You are truly a blessing and inspiration to Christians around the globe.
Love in Christ,
East Brunswick Baptist Church
Dear Dr. Thomas,
I pray that you are feeling stronger everyday, and healing quickly. Your example of faith is amazing. God said that we should have faith the size of a mustard seed. Your faith is bigger than the entire mustard tree. I was recently hospitalized for several days, and hate to confess it took me several of those days to realize that God had me there for a purpose. If only I hadn't wasted those first days sulking. You are such an example of how we should all place our faith and trust in God and His perfect plan.
Tomorrow is Missions Emphasis Sunday at our church. You, your family, and the orphans that you hold so dear will be the first point on my missions report.
May God keep you comfortable as you recover. May He give your family peace, and may He give your entire organization and those whose lives they touch a special portion of His love and grace.
With Christ's love,
Jeannie Wolkens

It was a blessing to get to know you over the last year and an honor to work for Hopegivers this last year. We will keep you and the orphans in our prayers.

Dr. Thomas,
We had a wonderful visit in October when we came to India to bring glasses and dental care. We are praying for you and the Orphans. God used our visit to India in our lives and we want to be a blessing to you. We are praying for the ophans, the men and women as they go out on the mission teams around India. We love you and praise God for Emmanuel Ministries/Hopegivers.
Papa...

Dr. Thomas just want you to know that prayers are going up for you from Goldsboro NC. We look forward to your next visit to our town and we are thanking God in advance for what He will do We remember with fondness your visits here, seems like ages since we have seen you. Get well soon. We love you.
Dear Sam, Shelly & M.A...
We are praying for your family right now. So sorry to hear that M.A. is not well- he has been such an amazing source of inspiration and example of compassion. We are forever changed by our experiences living with you all in India and often reminisce over our days there with you. I will never forget Sam reading us a passage in the Old Testament involving a list of things people were to bring before God ...I remember the word "AND" being stressed..(Sam, do you remember this?) and challenging us towards what we bring before God...more importantly WHO we will bring before God. I know M.A.'s list of who he is bringing with him to God will have more "ands" than we can fathom. Thank you God.
We love you all and are praying for you!
Taryn Hofert
I am praying for your recovery and that you will continue to have the peace of Jesus Christ during this time. Your words had such an impact on my life when you visited Bishop Eddie Donovan in Pittsburgh a few years back. Thank you again for your encouragement in the Lord. I pray that I may also return to India for the orphans and those that need Jesus! May God bless you and your family.
Dear Brother Thomas,
We have know you for over 30 years. We don't know anyone that we respect more than you on this earth. We are praying God's will be done in your health but we are also praying selfishly, that we will have you here with us a few more years.
Thank you for the example you have shown us, almost everyday we quote you or tell others of your love for the Lord and the orphans.
It's a joy to serve with you.
Rex & Sara Austin
M A:
We pray that the Lord will put His healing hand on you so you can continue the work in India. You cannot imagine the enormous impact you and your ministry have had on our lives. We are eternally greatful. God bless you!
Geetings,
Everytime I hear of Dr. Thomas, I remember not to concentrate on the non-essentials of this life. He has inspired me to press for greater things that the Lord has for me to do. May God's will be done. Only He knows what's going on with His servant. I am a member of Calvary Baptist Church and I thank God for putting our family under a caring, compassionate pastor who encourages missions like Hopegivers. God bless you, sir, and all your staff.
Sincerely,
Arlene
M A (papa) Thomas: my friend it is with hope that I write to. as your brother in the Lord, and recipient of much of your prayer and knowing that we are not threatened by Heaven, Sarah an I have been praying for your recovery. by our God's grace you will either be restored to health to continue your earthly work according to God's plan or birthed into eternity! while you may be tired and ready to go home, I am not to sure that your family and your blessed children in the Hope homes are ready to let you go. so I ask you to consider, God willing, to stay with us just a little while longer. as Paul the Apostle stated for me to live is Christ, to die is gain! our love and prayer's Jere & Sarah Withers

Please know that our prayers are with you. You have blessed our son, John Batastini, with time he treasured spending with you. We will continue to support your mission for these orphans. May God bless you for all the blessings that you have given to others. In His name, George and Lynne Boudoucies
Dear brother M.A.
I remember when you stayed at our home outside of Gallatin, TN. while you were traveling around to speak at different churches. That was about 12 years ago, it was such a great honor and blessing to have such a man of God like yourself in our very own home. It reminded me of old testament times when the man of God would stay with a poor window women. Our home is small and all we could offer you was some pizza for dinner. You were so very graious to us. I remember you were very tired and you went into our daughters bedroom and slept. That night I asked you to give us devotions. Those are precious memories for us. Our youngest son Dustin was only 3 years old then, and you asked him if he wanted to be a preacher when he growed up, and he said, No! and you thought it was very funny! He is now 15 years old; while he was having his personal devotions last summer outside in our backyard, he felt God calling him to be a missionary, praise the Lord! Our family talked about you today, after we read Shelley's email to me about your condition, and how you had stayed in our home. I found the book you wrote about your life story and how the ministry got started, and gave it to our son Dustin to read today, he is already half way through it! A person will never know the impact their life has had for the Lord, until it is someday revealed to them in glory. I know you are in God's hands and that He is in perfect control over all that happens to you my dear brother. We love you and will be praying for you and your dear family.
I John 4:18 tells us that God's perfect love casts out all fear and anxiety, beause as we know Him personally and intimately, and understand His great love for us, and as we rest in His perfect love, we can be confident that he is in complete control of everything, driving out all fear from inside us. Praise the Lord! We Love you M.A.
Sincerely, James Dise
My tribute to Papa:
With a heart as big as India
Thomas set out to find God’s will
He planned to walk, but caught a ride
And left with three friends, a Bible and bride
No money for rent and no congregation
He started an orphanage in a filling station
Home is where the heart is
Where the hope of Calvary resides
And the oppression of hate was kept outside
With a booming voice full of laughter
He filled the places with orphans and praises to the rafters
“Give me more arrows” he cries to the Lord
Then stepped back and watched
While the Lord indeed poured
Fifty years worth of blessings
And answers to prayer
Each orphan with love was treated with care
As God’s orphan army
Is straightened and sorted
And given a point, For Satan’s plan to be thwarted
“India is the Lord’s” Papa did claim
While the Lion still prowls and seeks to maim
Not on our watch
He says to his son
India belongs to the only begotten One
The treasure of Hope, with peace and with pride
His son labors on never leaving his side
He will never give up, he has too much to do
He claims every promise of God’s for they’re true
Call out to Jesus, it’s time to repent
Call out right now before your life has been spent
Claim the greatest gift that man could receive
And notice how Satan seeks each day to deceive
But your home in heaven is now in reserve
By Gods grace you can now say you deserve
But in the meantime pick up your cross, Follow me
As Christ is for India, Papa with vision did see

Thank you Sandy, we send our love to Bishop his family and all of Emmanuel, Fr.Bart
From my visit with Papa earlier today!
As his heart still beats for India
He sits on the side of the bed
He ponders the future of his love
And recalls the life he’s lead
His eyes still dance with fire
He remembers the honored dead
Since 1960 he has lost more than twenty
That by his side have suffered and bled
Our private Christmas miracle
We find Papa fast asleep
His snoring reminds us that he’s still alive
And that this season is one of peace
Such a trial is far from pleasant
This Christmas we would not seek
Yet being able to sit in his presence
Is a gift that beckons me to be meek
Praying at his bedside
His hand is holding mine
I feel the presence of Holiness
The presence of the one Divine
Get well soon Papa
Is the charge we give to him
With so much work left to do
His India we must win
We continue to pray for your complete recovery having faith and knowing God is answering everyone's prayers for you through daily miracles.
Thank you, Jesus, for Dr. Thomas and how your light shines through him.
Bro. Thomas: Living with you and your family for 3 months in 1982 was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Thank you for being such a wonderful examply of a godly man. I am praying for another amazing recovery for you!

"God is still on the Throne; and He will remember His own! His promise is true! He will not forget you! GOD is still on the Throne!" The memory of you singing/teaching us that wonderful chorus goes all the way back to 1978! And there are so many memories as since that day- you were often in our home, our church; and we traveled to other churches both here in the States and in India. In 1978, I remember your first time being in our home. We had left you upstairs for awhile. I came and knocked on your door, calling you to supper. As I looked in, you had pen and paper in hand, you were writing home to India... and you were crying. The death of your brother in India, months previous, was still fresh on your heart and you told me that the letter read, "The LORD who took my brother home has now given me another brother!" Of course, as time has moved on, you have so many new brothers! Praise the LORD! In India, do you remember me coming to breakfast morning after morning trying to discribe to you the SCREAMING outside my window at night? You said, "It must be pigs... or dogs...!" Finally, I came with a tape recording of the sound! And it was the guy riding his bike through the streets of Kota, scaring the thieves away!
Yes, the memories! Maybe you remember the brother who often pled,"Beware when in the land of the Laodiceans." And, of course, there are the many past faithful dealings of the LORD! Bro. Thomas: YOU ARE LOVED AND PRAYED FOR HERE! May you experience the God of all Comfort and Jesus as your GREAT PHYSICIAN!

I first learned of you when I attended Liberty University between 1994-1998. I remember many times Jerry Falwell requesting prayer for you as you suffered beatings for preaching God's Word. I prayed for you then, and I pray for you now. May God give you the healing you need to return to India soon.

We are delighted in the great recovery seen since the day of the stroke. We have continued and will continue to pray for recovery. All the months that I spent traveling and in close companionship with M.A. and Samuel has truly been a motivation for our ministry to India. If the need arises I will joyfully assist in any way I can for travel assistance for M.A. on his return to India as the Lord wills.

We had a healing service last night at my new church and so I sat in for you, got anointed with oil, everyone put their hands on me and we all prayed for your speech to improve. God has kept you here to restore you once again. Jesus loves you so much. Close your eyes and you will feel His presence. Isn't our Lord wonderful?
I love you and pray for you and for our one million orphans.
Barbara
I remember when you had eye surgery and you took the time while recovering to send me a note thanking me for my contribution. Well, you need not worry about sending me a thank you now. Just focus on getting better. As long as the Lord provides I will continue to help the orphans, and He's never failed to provide. :)
Dear M.A.,
I have seen the love of Christ radiate from you more than any other person I have ever known. Your selfless spirit, compassion and love for the orphans, lepers, preacher boys and countless others in your ministry truly reflects the Holy Spirit that dwells within you. I pray for your total, complete healing and praise God for bringing our paths together. I have been enriched for eternity from knowing you. To God alone be the glory.
Dr. Thomas,
I am John Batastini's mom and just want you to know that my husband and I are praying for your health and how we can help with this ministry. We have just read All God's Children and God Will Provide and I am ready to join your army of helpers! My first volunteer job at age 15 was at an orphanage in Smyrna, Georgia. John's grandfather, my dad, was a pediatrician who took care of the medical needs of the orphans, so what you are doing is close to my heart. I am purchasing books and will meet with many contacts in Atlanta to do what God will have us do here. God bless you for all you have done for His children all the lives you have touched.

Dearest Papa:
I was so glad to see your picture. You look great and the beard is still there! I know you want it left until we have one million orphans training to win India to Christ. It will happen.
Love you SOOOO much

Dear Archbishop, friend, mentor and beloved servant of God,
I think of you often and continue to believe, in the all powerful name of Jesus Christ, that you will be healed from your affliction. Despite your current condition I know that the most powerful part of your personal ministry continues...your pray life. Though the enemy would like nothing more than to sow discouragement over your current state of health, I believe like the apostle Paul that in our weakness Christ's power is made perfect. And for those who place their trust in Christ and glory in their infirmities, Christ's power rest's upon them. When I see the pictures posted of you on the internet I see defiance and determination to resist the lies of the enemy. I see the resilience of an annointed, wise man of God. I see pride in Christ who strengthens you. You are a great source of encouragement for me, and though your words fail you at times your life continues to speak volumes to all who listen to the message of your actions.
I love you, I miss you, I pray for you and as always I solicit your prayers for our ministry.
Yours In His Service,
Bishop Jonathan Stewart
ps. Sam if you happen to read this post please know that my thoughts, prayers and love are with you also...your friend.
Just want you to know many are praying for you to get better, to be strengthened to help complete the vision of reaching 1 million orphans for Christ Jesus!! We are thankful for your heroic leadership & pray you will remember His promises to be with you.
He did not give you a spirit of fear, may you overcome every fear through your faith in Christ. See 2 Timothy 1:7

Dear Papa:
I pray that you will cooperate with all of your therapists. When I was recovering from my automobile accident I asked them what the hardest thing was about their work. They ALL said it was patients that would not do what they asked because they knew they could help them if the patient would do everything they asked. So please do as they ask no matter how hard it is. You will bless them and get better. What a joy that will be.
Love you
Barbara

Praying God will surround you with His love & give you what you need to continue & complete what He's begun in you. You've shown many kindnesses to other people in need. Looked after orphans & widows in their distress & kept from being stained by the world. Listen to the Holy Spirit's voice - choose to keep on making that difference in the world,
with much love
Dr. Thomas....You are my brother, my friend. I love you and appreciate you so much. 21 years ago I met you in Delhi. That meeting changed my life. I have had the opportunity of standing with Elizabeth and Sam in Tenkasi. I have witnessed thousands coming to Christ. Your faithfulness to Jesus Christ continues to inspire so many of us. Nothing is too hard for the Lord. Christ For India!!
Dear Dr Thomas,
I just returned from Delhi and Agra. I was there for 2 weeks and one of your mentees, Joseph Thomas. Joseph was our faithful guide. I want you to be encouraged in knowing that Jospeh is doing great things for the Kingdom. His ministry to the children and lepers of Delhi is going strong. Over and over he talked about you and his love for you. If he were able I am sure there is no place he would rather be than at your bedside at this time. Instead I will send love and respect on his behalf. Many thanks for all you have done.

Dr Thomas,
I am so sorry to hear of the news of your recent sickness! You are very special to my family and myself-I think of you often and pray for you often as well and for the ministry as well as Sam and all involved in Christ for India! You have always been a special brother and mentor to me! You have influenced my life tremendously and have given me a real heart for India! I just got back from India on a Joni & Friends Wheels for the World trip where we spent 2 weeks in Bangalore/Hubli fitting wheel chairs to the disabled! How God blessed me and the group of 9 that went! This trip was a result of you asking me to come to India w/you and to see and support the ministry! God has used you and your family in a mighty way and He's not done yet!!! Our thoughts and prayers will always be with you and the ministry Dr Thomas--you're a special person in my life and I will never forget the nights spent praying w/you on our knees in the bedroom and in the other rooms-praying for each other as we laid our hearts bare before the Lord! I love you very much and your walk w/the Lord is Honorable to say the least! To say that I have had the special honor to share my house, family, food and to help fill that chicken bread basket w/you has TRULY been a GIFT FROM GOD and a blessing that my family and I will NEVER FORGET!!! We love you----Yours In CHRIST Frank Smalley and family PS. Mary says hello
