Serving Widows

"Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction.." - James 1:27

Though most of Hopegivers' work serving the poor in various parts of the world deals with caring for orphaned, abandoned, and at-risk children, there is another group of abandoned, lonely, starving souls that are frequently forgotten: Widows. It seems that widows in nearly every culture are easily set aside - like you would toss out an old, used chair. But that is not God's way. To Him all lives have value. Regardless of age, gender or circumstance, He has an ongoing plan and purpose for each and every person.

Women never lose their desire to fill the needs of others. It's a gift that God places in many women around the world, regardless of age or circumstance. Being needed gives them purpose. Who better to shower love on a motherless orphan than a widow who once was a mother? Who better to teach girls how to be little ladies, and boys to be little gentlemen than a mother or grandmother who once taught those same life skills to her own children?
With Christ in their hearts, the widows at Hopegivers reflect not only a mother's love, but the awesome, unfailing love of God.

Scripture is very clear about those we are to extend heart and hand to.

"He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing" (Deuteronomy 10:18).

The care of widows in the Bible is not a mere suggestion. We cannot "specialize" when it comes to caring for the needy. We are to provide for the many widows left to die on any street in any country from starvation and abuse. At Hopegivers, we find that the widows who are physically able want to help wherever they can in our Hope Homes, medical clinics, churches and schools. God designed the human heart to thrive when life has purpose. Abandoned and destitute widows rescued from the streets know full well what it feels like to live hopelessly and helplessly. Having been on both sides of life - a family and then abandonment in old age - the widows at Hopegivers choose life for themselves. With their hearts full, they enthusiastically pour that same life into others.

We ask that you follow the call of the Lord and be a part of that which God himself calls "pure and undefiled." As the church, the body of Christ in this world, help us care for widows, who, as the apostle Paul said, have placed all their care in Christ alone.
