Haiti

Haiti is a country blessed with vibrant art, music, and culture. However, for much of its 200 year history, this country of 10 million has endured a tragic cycle of corruption, environmental degradation, lack of opportunity and internal strife; but its people eagerly await better days ahead. Sharing the island of Hispaniola with its neighbor, the Dominican Republic, Haiti lies less than 700 miles from the U.S. border.

Despite its close proximity to the U.S., Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with a per capita annual income of only $1070, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Haiti's children, who make up nearly 40% of the total population, are also among the most vulnerable in the world, with an infant mortality rate of 60 per 1000. Due to widespread disease and malnutrition, children that do survive childbirth face a 1 in 10 chance of dying by the age of 5 (WHO).

In spite of these, and many other difficulties the people of Haiti are facing, we rejoice because God's people can, will, and already are effecting great change here. Hopegivers began working in Haiti in 2006, and has since been blessed to see great fruit and progress. Through your donations we have been able to construct an orphanage that houses 32 children, purchased land for agricultural development, purchased a vehicle for transportation of orphans, and a well for clean drinking water for the children of the orphanage and the community. Hopegivers has also been able to provide much needed medicine, as well as nearly 130,000 meals for orphaned or at-risk children in Haiti.

We are excited about the path the Lord has brought us on in Haiti and look forward to the doors he continues to open as we pursue where He desires Hopegivers to serve on Hispaniola.
