Amrutha's Story

Homeless by age two, Amrutha seemed destined for a short, empty and tragic life. Both of her parents died when she was two, and no one stepped up to take in the little girl. Her dad was beaten to death and her mom died from an illness within the span of a year.

After their untimely deaths, Amrutha was dropped off at a local homeless shelter and it was there that she grew up. Amrutha lived on the streets, somehow managing to survive. Many beggars would often use her, claiming she was their child, thus increasing their chances of receiving more alms. As for Amrutha, she received just enough to survive.

David's Story

David had a very difficult childhood growing up on the mean streets of Calcutta--a city of nearly 15 million. Despite this rough beginning, he is one of the sweetest, most caring lads you will ever meet.

David recalls how he used to spend his days on the streets begging for food or money for his siblings and sickly mother. His father was long-gone before the time David took his first steps.

Arupa's Story

Arupa is another one of our walking miracles. She is a source of inspiration to everyone she is around. Growing up with seven (that's right, 7) brothers and sisters in a poor family, Arupa worked in the fields from a very young age along with her siblings. Despite everyone's hard work and best efforts, there was never enough to go around. Never enough food, never enough blankets, never enough time--you can imagine the stress and anxiety they faced on a daily basis.

Seeta's Story

Seeta is a bright, helpful and joyful young girl. She is also a walking miracle! Crippled by polio as a child, she was barely able to walk. She recalls hobbling around on a crude wooden crutch that did little but cause her more pain. Seeta's father was a poor farmer, and she was never able to attend school or do all the "kid" things she longed to do. Imagine the sadness of watching other children hapilly playing without a care, knowing that you will never enjoy that freedom. She looked at her legs in disgust, wondering why this should happen to her.

Biplab's Story

Biplab is just an all around great guy. He was kind enough to take a few moments out of his busy schedule of going to school, playing soccer and of course, being a heartthrob. Here's his story. Bip's father was poisoned and passed away when he was just an infant. Three years later, his mother died of malaria. She worked in the fields, and like so many other poor laborers in India, was unable to get sufficient medical treatment before it was too late. It was certainly a tough start for young Bip, but God had a plan for him. A plan that would give him a chance at a bright future. But it was not without struggle...

Mirjana's Story

Mirjana is one of the sweetest girls you will ever meet. God brought her to us and delivered her from a near-death experience in a way that can only be described as miraculous. Little Mirjana came to the Oleander 1 Hope Home in 2005. She was born to a poor family and has 4 other siblings. Her dad was a lottery ticket vendor who struggled to make enough to make ends meet for the large family. Mirjana recalls a tragic early childhood of hunger, bone-chilling winters, untreated illnesses and the lack of education.

Elealsha & Eleena's Story

These adorable sisters were rescued in 2006 after their father--who was an addict and notorious troublemaker--was murdered by someone in the neighborhood. Their mother did the best she could to provide for the girls, but she did not earn enough at her job as a sweeper. On a good day, she could earn about $2 a day, but most days yielded much less. Trying to meet the needs of her two precious girls soon became overwhelming and threatened to tear the family apart

Joshna & Rochna's Story

Pastor Doni's first rescued child (Palm 1) , Joshna came to the home in November '02 when an Orissa pastor told him about her. She was an orphan from a small village and was living in miserable, poverty-stricken circumstances. Though she spoke a different language, was used to different customs and pretty came from another world, Joshna was happy to have a new safe place to call home.

When she first came to the home, she used to pray every night in her mother tongue of Oriya and Doni had no idea what she was praying about. It turns out she was praying that God would bring her little sister to live with her at the Hope Home.
