David, 12--David had a very difficult childhood growing up on the mean streets of Calcutta--a city of nearly 15 million. Despite this rough beginning, he is one of the sweetest, most caring lads you will ever meet.
David recalls how he used to spend his days on the streets begging for food or money for his siblings and sickly mother. His father was long-gone before the time David took his first steps.
David recalls picking through piles of rubbish; often competing with dogs, goats and other homeless people for whatever scraps of food he could find. Often times he would wonder in disbelief why some people he saw had so much, while kids like him were left with nearly nothing. Then in 2004, one of the pastors from the Magnolia 1 Hope Home met David on the streets of Calcutta and asked the boy where his home was. He led the pastor back to a makeshift tent that served as a home for his mother and siblings. Heartbroken, the pastor asked David's mother if he might be happier in a place where all his needs would be met, along with a free education. David's mother was overjoyed with the proposition, and David left with the pastor soon thereafter.
Today, David is one of the happiest children in the home and does a great job caring for the younger orphans. Chicken is his favorite food and English is his favorite subject in school. But his favorite thing about his new home is all the love and attention he gets from his house parents and new brothers and sisters.
